Old Wood

After the Japanese garden we have made a path through the old wood. You will see on the right a Sequoia sempervirens (Californian red-wood) about fifty feet high after only forty years, a Sequoiadendron giaganteum (Wellingtonia) planted about a hundred years ago and then the Rhododendron dell in an old quarry.

Fern Garden

In 2003 we made a geodesic dome to house the late Peter Hainsworths outstanding fern collection. When we started gardening in 1977 Peter Hainsworth was an inspiration and adviser.

Head gardener Geoff Stephenson and Frances MacKenzie have become fascinated by ferns and with the help of Martin Rickard and other fern enthusiasts, we have one of the biggest fern collections in Scotland now beautifully displayed in an old quarry.
